Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about our software or collaboration with us?
Here you will find the most frequently asked questions and answers.

What is qbilon?

qbilon is a software platform for companies that automatically collects all IT-relevant data, merges it into a comprehensive overview picture and enables individual evaluation.

How to pronounce "qbilon" and where does the name come from?

We pronounce it “q-bee-lon”. The name is derived from the word “cube” and refers to IT data being viewed from different perspectives. Therefore, our logo also includes a cube within the big upper-case “Q”.

Who founded qbilon?

qbilon is a company based in Augsburg (Germany) founded in 2019 by four former computer science PhD students at the University of Augsburg. Learn more about our team and background here.

Is qbilon a "typical" EAM tool?

No, it isn’t. EAM tools usually focus on capturing more abstract data such as workflows, processes and personnel assignment. In qbilon, such information is merged with technical data to obtain one comprehensive overview picture.

How does qbilon differ from products in the area of Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) and Application Performance Monitoring/Management (APM)?

Existing solutions usually require time-consuming manual data entry, store data according to a fixed schema in proprietary formats and are not able to create a coherent overall picture of the IT landscape. In contrast, our software relies on a high degree of automation when capturing data, which is then stored in a flexible schema and without the threat of vendor lock-in. This allows all information to be efficiently merged into a constantly up-to-date and consistent overall picture of the IT landscape.

I am already using an EAM tool. Is it anyway profitable for me to use qbilon?

Yes. EAM tools are a data source type that qbilon merges with other information to create a comprehensive IT overview picture. EAM tools focus on mapping strategic business planning, capturing work processes and measuring business goal achievement.
qbilon, on the other hand, has a more technical focus and is concerned with the optimal provision of IT services at the operational level so that the business processes built on them can run smoothly and reliably.

I already have an APM tool in use. Is qbilon still useful for me?

Yes. APM tools are a data source type that qbilon merges with other information to create a comprehensive IT overview picture. APM tools are used to monitor IT systems at a deep, technical level – providing detailed, end-to-end observation of network traffic and individual applications.
qbilon, on the other hand, is used primarily at the IT infrastructure and application level, where it sets the captured IT assets in an overall context by showing dependencies and thus enabling the individual assessment of the IT landscape.

Capturing Data

Which assets can be captured using qbilon?

In general, all IT-relevant assets can be captured – from running services to active server and database instances to applications, products or staff responsibilities. qbilon flexibly adapts to your company’s data.

Which data sources and application data can be captured with qbilon?

Basically, any third-party software can be connected, as long as it has a documented Web API (e.g., ReST or SOAP) and provides its data in a standardized format (a structured form). Cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure, virtualization software such as vSphere, and application performance monitoring tools such as Dynatrace can be integrated without any customization effort.

Does qbilon also offer the feature to enter data manually?

Yes, properties can be added manually in addition to automatically captured assets. Existing data can also be overwritten by the user.

Is it possible to capture data from a company's in-house software (customized or legacy solutions)?

Yes. The qbilon software can process all data which being provided in a structured form and that can be retrieved via an API. However, the integration of data from in-house software does require the development of a customized adapter.

How long does it take to create an overview of an IT landscape?

Many adapters are already available for the fast integration of common data sources. Using these, it only takes a few minutes to generate a comprehensive picture of the IT landscape. In addition, the simple creation of individual views already addresses numerous use cases. Therefore, the insights required for a particular IT decision can be gained in a very short time.

Using the Software

What are the scenarios and use cases for which merged data sources and an overall IT picture can be utilized?

For example, you can evaluate the cost efficiency of your cloud landscape and reveal hidden costs, find potential security vulnerabilities in your IT landscape, and check whether the IT architecture complies with your corporate policies. Further typical application examples can be found here.

What employees use the tool?

qbilon focuses on IT architects and is also primarily used by C-level decision makers (e.g., CIO and CISO), IT leaders, and DevOps professionals.

For which enterprise size is the use of qbilon recommended?

Depending on the IT intensity of the business area, experience has shown that companies of around 250 employees or more benefit significantly from qbilon.

Can I try qbilon?

Yes. Just contact us to get a trial version.

Does the software run on premises or as a cloud/SaaS service?

qbilon is a software-as-a-service solution that runs in any common browser. An on-prem version can be made available on demand.

On which devices can I use the software?

The software is a browser application and therefore runs on various operating systems and all common end devices such as tablets, laptops or desktop computers. We recommend using devices that have at least a 10″ screen diagonal and “HD-Ready” resolutions (720p).

How do I get updates?

Since qbilon is deployed as browser-based SaaS application, you’re automatically using the most current version at any time.
